Redshirt Senior averaged 49.2 yards per punt against LSU
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Redshirt senior Johnny Townsend earned Ray Guy Punter of the Week honors after his performance against LSU, as the committee announced Monday.
This is Townsend's first Punter of the Week accolade this season and the second of his career.
Townsend recorded five punts for a total of 246 yards, averaging 49.2 yards per punt against LSU. The game against the Tigers brought his season average to 48.85 yards per punt, which leads both the nation and the SEC by more than a yard.
The Orlando, Fla. native recorded four punts inside the 20-yard line, bringing his season total to 12. He also booted two punts over 50 yards, including a 61-yarder that tied his season-long. That was Townsend's third punt over 60 yards this season and he has racked up 14 punts over 50 yards.
Through his first five games of the season, Townsend sits in second place in UF's history for career yardage. With 9,317 yards on 202 punts, the redshirt senior sits just 583 yards away from tying the program record.
The Gators return to The Swamp on Saturday to face SEC opponent Texas A&M at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
