Redshirt senior one of 21 athletes named to team
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Redshirt senior Johnny Townsend has been named to the 2017 SEC Football Community Service team, as the Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday.
The SEC names a Community Service Team for each of its 21-league sports, looking to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his community through superior service efforts.
Townsend, who was named as one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award and a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy, has been a leader both on and off the field for the Gators.
Off the field, Townsend is earning his Master of Science in Management, after having already earned his Bachelor's degree in Telecommunication. He has earned three SEC Academic Honor Roll distinctions, as well as taking home SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll accolades in 2013. He has done numerous hours of community service with 10 different community service organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity and UF Shands Cancer Hospital. Townsend has also worked multiple hours with the Boy Scouts of America, in which he holds the distinction of Eagle Scout.
On the field, the Orlando, Fla. native has broken several UF records this season. Townsend became Florida's all-time leader in punts (240), punting yardage (11,090) and career punting average (46.2). This season he finished fourth in the nation and first in the SEC, averaging 47.5 yards per punt. He also recorded 27 punts of over 50 yards and 27 punts inside of the 20-yard line.
