GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After a 5-0 start to the 2017 season with marquee wins over then-No.6 Michigan and No.25/24 USF, the University of Florida softball team moved up to No.1 in both the USA Today/NFCA Coaches' & ESPN.com/USA Softball Polls on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
The Gators opened the season at the USF Wilson-DeMarini Invitational this past weekend and picked up wins over Illinois State (9-0, five innings), St. John's (5-2), Michigan (2-1, 10 innings), Delaware (9-0, five innings) and USF (8-0, six innings).
It is the third consecutive year that Florida has been ranked a top both national polls after the opening weekend of play. The team garnered 18 of the 32 available first place votes in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches' Poll and 16 of the 20 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll this week.
Last season Florida ranked No.1 in both polls 14 out of the 16 weeks of the season.
The team returns to action tomorrow at 6 p.m. to take on Jacksonville University (4-1) in Jacksonville, Fla. Adam Schick and Kelsey Horton will have the call on WGGG (92.1 FM/1230 AM) & WMOP (100.1 FM/900 AM) and the game will be streamed live on ESPN3 which can be found on WatchESPN.com or the WatchESPN app.
