No. 1 Gators Host Aquafina Invitational for Home Opener

Florida holds a 31-5 overall record against the tournament field heading into this year's Aquafina Invitational.
TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 1 Gators will set foot on the field at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium for the first time of the 2017 season on Friday, Feb. 17, when the team takes on Florida A&M at 3:45 p.m. the team will turn right back around to play Northwestern State at 6 p.m.

In all, Florida will play a total of five games on the weekend.

Overall: The Gators will square off the rattlers for the 14th time overall on Friday. UF is a perfect 13-0 against FAMU dating back to when the program's inaugural season in 1997 when the Gators took the first meeting 3-0 in eight innings. It's the only time the two have went to extras.

Last Meeting: The pitching tandem of Delanie Gourley and Kelly Barnhill combined for a Florida single-game record 18 strikeouts against the Rattlers on the final day of last year's Aquafina Invitational.

Gourley recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched, and Barnhill dealt five strikeouts to the only five Rattlers she faced.

Last Meeting: The No. 3/11 University of Florida softball team won the final game of the three-game series against Northwestern State, 10-1, on Sunday afternoon at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. Sophomore Michelle Moultrie (Jacksonville, Fla.) went 5-for-8 (.625) on the weekend with a double, a triple, a home run and six RBIs. Junior Kelsey Bruder (Corona, Calif.) also went 5-for-8 on the series with four runs, two homers, six RBIs and 11 total bases.

Overall: The Gators will face FIU for the 17th time in program history and holds a commanding 13-3 all-time record over the Panthers. Florida has seven straight and 12 out of the last 13 contests. There has also been a total of five mercy-rule victories over the in-state foe.

Last Meeting: The Florida pitching duo of Aleshia Ocasio and Kelly Barnhill combined for 14 strikeouts in 12 shutout innings, as the No. 1-ranked Florida softball team defeated South Alabama and FIU on Saturday afternoon at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.

Offensively, Florida was led by senior Kirsti Merritt who went 5 for 6 on the day with three RBI, two runs scored, one walk and one hit by pitch.

 Last Meeting: The Gators started fast against Maryland, scoring six runs in the opening inning. Highlights included a three-run home run by Bailey Castro (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and an RBI double by Stephanie Tofft (Lincoln, Calif.). The other runs in the inning came on a bases-loaded walk by Justine McLean (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and a fielder's choice by Kelsey Stewart (Wichita, Kan.).

Florida added three more runs in the second inning with a two-run double from Kathlyn Medina (Downey, Calif.) and a sacrifice fly from Stewart. The Gators put an exclamation point on the game with seven runs in the fourth inning, starting with a two-run single by Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.). Tofft drew a bases-loaded walk three batters later to score Haeger before Medina logged another RBI single. Briana Little (Middleburg, Fla.) forced in a run when she drew a pinch-hit walk, and Aubree Munro (Brea, Calif.) did the same to put the Gators ahead 16-0, producing the final margin as Bache set the Terrapins down in order to seal the win.
