Gators come home for SunTrust Gator Invitational
Friday, February 17, 2017 | Men's Golf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida men's golf team will look to defend its home "turf" this weekend as it hosts the SunTrust Gator Invitational.
UF is looking to win its home tournament for the first time since 2011. A season ago, the Gators came in third place, which was its best result since 2012. Sophomore Sam Horsfield will try to build off his performance from last year's tournament where he tied a first round record, 63 (-7), en route to a second-place finish at 201 (-9).
The Gators are coming off individual and team victories at the Sea Best Invitational, where Florida swept the event for the second-consecutive year. At the Sea Best two weeks ago, UF shot an 836, which was its best score of the year.
Course Information: The 2017 SunTrust Gator Invitational is being held at the par-70, 6,701-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
Tournament Information: The tournament will be a two-day, 54-hole event.
Head Coach J.C. Deacon:
On what the SunTrust Gator Invitational means to him…
"It's very important. It's our course, our city and we're welcoming everyone here, including a lot of family and friends. It's important for us to show how much work and time we've put in and obviously the guys are really proud of their school and this course, and they want to put on the best show as they possibly can."
On taking the successes so far this year into the SunTrust Gator…
"That's the nice thing with golf, the confidence continues to build. We are definitely a confident team right now. The guys have been working hard and I've been really impressed with their preparation this week. I expect us to go out and play really well like we have so far this year."
On what the team needs to do to win the SunTrust Invite…
"We just have to have another good day of preparation today and be 100 percent comfortable with the golf course and speedy greens. I'm really confident in the preparation that we've had up to this point, I know the guys will do a good job today getting themselves ready to play and it is a big deal for (seniors) Ryan (Orr) and AJ (Crouch), I want them to have a (SunTrust Gator Invitational) title. All we can control right now is our preparation and the time we use and we'll make sure the guys do a good job of that today."
