The Gators lost to the Commodores for the third time this season and second time in six days.
AT THE BUZZER
VANDERBILT 72, No. 17 FLORIDA 62 (OT)
WHAT HAPPENED: The seventh-seeded Commodores did to the Gators what they did the previous two meetings, throughly frustrating the No. 2 seed in the Southeastern Conference Tournament -- especially from the 3-point line -- and sweeping them from the tourney field with an overtime win before a partisan crowd just three miles from the Vandy campus. Florida had a chance to win the game in regulation, taking the ball out under its basket with 9.7 seconds left. Senior guard Kasey Hill drove the length of the floor and missed a contested layup. Sophomore center Kevarrius Hayes rebounded the ball and his shot just before the buzzer was blocked by 7-foot-1 Luke Kornet. The Commodores scored the first five points of the extra period, including a 3-pointer by Nolan Cressler, and were never really challenged after that. Junior guard Riley LaChance led Vandy with 16 points, including 4-for-7 from the 3-point line. Forward Jeff Roberson had 16 points and eight rebounds, with Kornet, who killed the Gators just six days earlier in the regular-season finale, finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Florida got 16 points each from Hill and sophomore guard KeVaughn Allen, with forward Devin Robinson adding 11 points and 10 rebounds.
WHAT IT MEANS: An early exit from the tournament. That's bad enough. But worse, the Gators have now lost three of their last four games. That won't be looked on very favorably by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee. UF likely looms as a No. 5 seed in the tournament, which probably precludes them from playing in the Orlando pod. If the committee sees the Gators as a No. 4, that may be good enough.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: The 3-point line, as is Vandy's way. The league's best at shooting long ball went 11-for-27 in the game, compared to UF's 6-for-23.
STAGGERING STATISTIC: UF coach Mike White is now 0-5 in his two seasons against Vanderbilt, the only team in the SEC the Gators have not beaten in that time.
UP NEXT: The Gators (24-8) will waste no time hanging around Nashville. The team will fly out late Friday night and then wait for Sunday night's NCAA Selection Show to find where it'll be dispatched for the program's first tournament berth since the 2014 season.
