Sam Horsfield will look to add to his team-leading five top-25 finishes this year.
Gators Continue Season at Schenkel Invitational
Thursday, March 16, 2017 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga. – The University of Florida men's golf team travels to Georgia this weekend to compete in the Schenkel Invitational for the 32nd time. Over the years, Florida has picked up three team titles, 22 top-five finishes and five individual medalists.
The No. 4-ranked Gators will look to get back on track after finishing outside the top-five for the first time this season at the Southern Highlands Collegiate a few weeks ago.
Individually, Sam Horsfield is looking to continue his good play and finish in the top-25 for the fifth-consecutive tournament. The sophomore was the only Gator under-par at the end of the Southern Highlands Collegiate and leads the team in top-25 finishes this year.
Course Information: The 2017 Schenkel Invitational is being held at the par-72, 6,947-yard Forest Heights County Club in Statesboro, Ga.
Tournament Information: The tournament will be a three-day, 54-hole event.
Head Coach J.C. Deacon:
On the Schenkel Invitational…
"It's a great tournament. A different golf course than we've been facing lately, but it's another good challenge. There will be some good teams there this week. It's a really fun trip as the Schenkel Tournament committee does an awesome job and the kids have a blast. It's coming at the right time of year. We all need to relax a bit and just let it happen. I'm excited to get at it and not think too much about what's been going on and get these guys playing golf again and see if we can't get in contention and get back in the winner's circle."
On Sam Horsfield's performance…
"Sam, from everything I can see, he's playing his best golf right now. He hasn't had that really low round yet, but it's coming. If it doesn't come this week, I'm sure it'll come (at the Mason Rudolph Championship). I don't think there's any pressure that he needs to put on himself, he just needs to keep doing the same things. He's hitting a ton of greens in regulation and he's the best putter I know, so the scores are going to come."
On what he can expect from his team at the tournament…
"We just need to keep playing smart and doing the things we're doing. We have too good of a team to string three bad weeks in a row, so I'm expecting a great week. We're going to and have a lot of fun, spend a lot of time together and see what happens."
