Gators look to defend at Briar’s Creek Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida's women's golf team will look to defend its title at Briar's Creek Invitational on March 20-21. In addition to the No. 5-ranked Gators, four other top-30 teams will be competing in the two-day event.
In the 2016 Briar's Creek Invitational, UF won the event with an 11-stroke lead over the field at six-under (858). The Gators also took home the title in 2015.
Individually at last season's Briar's Creek, Sam Wagner led the Gators at four-under (212) and tied for fifth. Meanwhile, Maria Torres and Kelly Grassel both finished in the top-20 as they finished tied for seventh (three-under, 213), tied of 13th (one-over, 217), respectively.
UF last competed one week ago at the SunTrust Gator Invitational, where they took home both the team and individual title. Florida carded seven-over (847) to capture the title for the second-straight season and the 20th time in the event's 45 year history.
Torres had a stellar weekend at her final home tournament. The senior won the individual title and became the first Gator to win the Gator Invitational individual crown in nine years.
In the final round, Torres shot a career-best four-under (66) and recorded a Gator Invitational and collegiate-best score of five-under (205) for the tournament.
Course Information: The tournament is being held at the Par 72, 6,101 yards The Golf Club at Briar's Creek in Johns Island, S.C.
Format: 54-hole stroke play where teams will play three rounds over two days.

Senior Maria Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico): Was named SEC Women's Golfer of the Week after she took home the individual title at the Gator Invitational last weekend.
Senior Karolina Vlckova (Unhošt, Czech Republic): Competed at the Gator Invitational as an individual, where she finished in third place.
Freshman Marta Perez (Valencia, Spain): Was named SEC Women's Freshman Golfer of the Week, after a tied for fourth finish at the Gator Invitational.
Junior Taylor Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.): Carded a six-over (217) at the Gator Invitational, finishing in a tie for ninth place.
Senior Kelly Grassel (Chesterton, Ind.): Finished in a tie for 11th at the Gator Invitational, carding a seven-over (217).
