Big Inning Lifts Gators Over Razorbacks

Box Score | Recap

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –
It was a historic day for the University of Florida softball program as it earned its 1,000th victory in a 6-1 effort over Arkansas in the initial game of the series Friday, March 31 at Bogle Park.

Kelly Barnhill (12-0) pitched the Gators (31-2, 8-1 SEC) to victory over the Razorbacks (22-10, 2-8 SEC) and freshman Jaimie Hoover's career day at the plate brought the Florida offense to life.

Florida scored all six of its runs in the top of the fourth inning of play.

Hoover notched a career-high three hits (3-for-4) in the effort while she also produced an RBI and a run scored. Two of her three hits came in the top of the fourth inning where the Gators plated all six of their runs.

The Suwanee, Ga. Native led off the inning with a sharply hit single through the right site of the Razorback defense and later pushed across the sixth run of the game with an RBI single through the left side of the defense to bookend inning.

Between the hot bat of Hoover in the fourth, Florida plated its first runs of the game on a two-run double from freshman Jordan Roberts that scored both Hoover and Janell Wheaton.

The double to the wall in right field prompted a pitching change for the Razorbacks as Arkansas immediate brought in Grace Moll to relieve starter Caroline Hedgcock (0-2).

Sophia Reynoso brought home the third run of the game with her SAC bunt, which scored pinch runner Alex Voss from third base.

Amanda Lorenz cranked her fifth home run of the season two batters later to extend the lead out to 5-1.

The Gators return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. (ET). Fans can listen along with the action with Ryan Urquhart (play-by-play) & Kelsey Horton on WGGG (92.1 FM/1230 AM) & WMOP (100.1 FM/900 AM).

Coaches Corner
On the program reaching the 1,000 win milestone…
"To win that many games in just twenty and a half seasons, it's just really a nice accomplishment for everybody that has played at the University of Florida. All of the Gators that have come through here and graduated can all share a piece of that victory tonight."

On the big fourth inning against Arkansas…
"You really have to give Jaimie Hoover some credit; I thought she did a good job. We weren't really seeing the ball very well and I thought her at-bats were pretty important – not only her at-bat in the second (inning) but the at-bat to leadoff the fourth and when she turned the lineup over. It was good to see Jaimie get some hits. Obviously I moved her up to the four-hole so we saw something this week but I'm really just happy with our resiliency to just grind out some good at-bats."
