GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On the opening day of the 2017 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament, six Gators were named to the 2017 IWLCA All-South Region Teams and will now be eligible for IWLCA All-American honors.
Florida's six All-Region selections tie for the most in program history; the Gators also had six players honored in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016.
The Gators finished the regular season with a 17-2 record, and a perfect 9-0 sweep in the BIG EAST en route to winning the program's seventh conference title in a row, and fourth consecutive conference tournament championship. Most recently, Florida earned the No. 3 national seed in the NCAA Tournament, and will play the winner of Southern California and Jacksonville on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Awards have been rolling in for the Gators lately, including the BIG EAST Attacker, Defender, Goalkeeper, Coaching Staff of the Year, and a program-record 10 all-conference selections last week. Florida also set a school record by having three Tewaaraton Award Top-25 Nominees: Burgess, Fitzgerald, and Stevens.
Florida's six All-South nominees will now await IWLCA All-American selections on May 17. Last season, Taylor Bresnahan, Sammi Burgess, and Caroline Fitzgeraldearned three of the Gators' four All-American awards. Taylor Bresnahan & Caroline Fitzgerald have combined for 161 starts in their careers
