GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The media landscape has changed so drastically over the last decade, it's sometimes difficult to remember what it was like when TV, newspapers and radio delivered the bulk of the news.
Those days are long gone and content is king on the internet, whether you consume a video on your iPhone, a story from your hometown newspaper's website, or download a podcast and listen via your car's built-in entertainment center on the drive to work.
The ways to watch your favorite TV show, follow your favorite team, or listen to your favorite band are seemingly countless in today's digital media age.
For someone like the guy typing this, the written word remains the preferred way to consume information, whether news of major importance or the trivial hot-take of the hour.
A couple of colleagues I share a hallway with are also especially fond of the written word, FloridaGators.com senior writer Chris Harry and sports-information specialist/feature writer Zach Dirlam.
Harry has a similar background as me, two veteran scribes who came up through newspapers and made adjustments to continue our careers online and learn from a different view while working inside Florida's athletic department. Dirlam is part of a new generation of sports media professionals, versatile enough to pitch stories and create interest as the UF track program's primary communications contact, yet talented and motivated enough to write them for our own website.
The reason I mention this is because both Harry and Dirlam recently won Fred Stably Jr. Writing Awards from the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Harry's story on former Gators coach Steve Spurrier returning to UF – The Legend Down the Hallway -- won first place in the feature writing category on a coach/administrator/historical for District 3. Dirlam's in-depth feature on UF men's and women's track coach Mike Holloway – Coach of Olympians: What Drives Mike Holloway? -- placed second in the same category.
Next up is the national competition, which will be determined next month. Congrats to both Chris and Zach.
