Four Gator Teams Earn Academic Recognition

Four Florida teams -- men's basketball, women's golf and both men's and women's tennis -- received NCAA recognition on Wednesday for outstanding Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores that ranked in the top 10 percent of their sport.
"When you are recognized in the top 10 percent nationally for academic achievement, you are obviously performing at a very high level," said athletic director Scott Stricklin. "We applaud the commitment by the student-athletes and those that guide and mentor them to excellence beyond athletics."
This marks the fourth straight year the Gator men's basketball team has been recognized, the longest streak by an SEC men's basketball team in the history of the APR (since 2003).
The Florida women's tennis team has been honored three consecutive years, its longest streak to date and only one of three SEC women's tennis to have a three-year streak since the APR began.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation to provide a measure of each team's academic performance. This year's APR report is a multi-year rate based on scores from the academic years 2012-13 through 2015-16.
These teams have demonstrated success in athletics while achieving in the classroom. Men's basketball had two SEC championships and a Final Four appearance during those years, while women's tennis recorded three SEC championships and two national semifinal appearances. Men's tennis posted four SEC top-four finishes, an NCAA quarterfinal and another NCAA Sweet 16 appearance, while women's golf reached the NCAA championships three out of those four years.
