GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Following an impressive season on the field, 11 members of the Florida softball team made the 2017 Spring Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
The Gators (58-10, 20-3 SEC) captured their third straight SEC Regular Season Championship and appeared in the Women's College World Series Championship Series for the fifth time in the last nine years.
The 11 Academic Honor Roll members are the most to make the list for the Gators since the 2009 season. Overall in 2017, Florida has four NFCA All-American accolades, seven NFCA All-Southeast Region selections, seven All-SEC members and a representative each on the SEC All-Freshman and All-Defensive teams.
Seniors Justine McLean and Chelsea Herndon earn spots on the Academic Honor Roll for the second time of their careers, while juniors Kayli Kvistad and Janell Wheaton also make their second appearance.
Last year, sophomores Kelly Barnhill, Amanda Lorenz, Lily Mann, Theresa Swertfager, Alex Voss and redshirt freshman Sophia Reynoso all appeared on the First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll.
In addition to making the Academic Honor Roll, both Barnhill and Kvistad also earned spots on the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-American teams as first and second team selections respectively.
The 2017 SEC First Year Academic Honor Roll is set to be announced this Wednesday.
To be recognized to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letterwinner or have participated on a varsity team for two years if non-scholarship; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
