GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Two days after 15 Gators were named to the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll, all seven freshman lacrosse players graced the 2017 SEC First Year Honor Roll, announced Wednesday by the league office to bring Florida lacrosse's total to 22 student-athletes with academic honors in 2016-17.
Florida's seven freshman recognitions were tied for the third-most of any sport at the University of Florida, just behind Women's Swimming and Diving (10), and Men's Track (8).
Wednesday's announcement brings Florida's total of student-athletes named to a 2016-17 SEC Academic Honor Roll to 254. Florida placed 187 on the SEC Academic Honor Rolls (76 on fall list; 33 winter, 77 on spring) and 68 on the First-Year Honor Roll.
The Gators were also dominant on the field in 2017. Florida swept both the BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles to win the program's seventh straight conference championship. The Orange and Blue finished the season with a 17-3 record, collected three IWLCA All-America honors, 10 All-BIG EAST honorees, and four of the six major BIG EAST postseason awards.
To be recognized to the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letterwinner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
