Josie Kuhlman (tennis) and Alex McMurtry (gymnastics) are both CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large team members. For the 2016-17 season, Florida now has seven Academic All-Americans - second-highest season total ever for Florida.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida's first two NCAA Elite 90 Award winners claimed another top academic award Thursday. Gator juniors Josie Kuhlman (tennis) and Alex McMurtry (gymnastics) both are on the 2017 Collegiate of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America At-Large team.
A pair of Gators collected both NCAA champion and CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in 2017. Josie Kuhlman (left) was part of Florida's NCAA title tennis team and Alex McMurtry won all-around and uneven bars at the NCAA Championships.
McMurtry is making her second consecutive appearance on the CoSIDA Academic All-America list, moving up to first team in 2017 after earning third team honors as a sophomore. Kuhlman claims her first Academic All-America honor in 2017. The addition of this duo bring Florida's total of 2016-17 Academic All-Americans to seven, equaling the second-highest season total in the program's history.
Academic excellence prevailed among the 46 student-athletes on the three teams, as Kuhlman and McMurtry were among the 21 with a 4.0 grade point average.
Both student-athletes claimed the NCAA Elite 90 Award at their sport's NCAA Championship event. The honor goes to the student-athlete with the top overall grade point average at each of the 90 NCAA Championship sites. Kuhlman and McMurtry are the first two Gators to receive the NCAA Elite 90 since it began in the 2009-10 season.
Kuhlman turned in a 31-10 overall singles record for the 2017 NCAA champion Gators, playing the No. 2 dual match position by season's end. She teamed with Belinda Woolcock for a team-leading 24 doubles dual-match wins. The two-time All-Southeastern Conference first-team selection is a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete (min. 3.5 GPA). Kuhlman earned All-America singles honors as a freshman.
McMurtry is the 2017 Honda Award winner as collegiate gymnastics' top female student-athlete. She won the NCAA all-around title with a NCAA semifinal record of 39.8125 and shared the NCAA uneven bars title. She was the only gymnast to earn All-America first-team honors in the five events in 2017 NCAA Championships' competition. McMurtry collected both the SEC Gymnast and Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors in 2017. McMurtry is one of two in nation to earn 10.0s in three different events in 2017, including on uneven bars in NCAA Super Six team final.
McMurtry is pursuing a degree in applied physiology & kinesiology and Kuhlman is majoring in public relations.
