Quarterbacks Look to Build on Friday Scrimmage
Monday, August 14, 2017 | Football, Chris Harry
The first big chance for the QBs to separate themselves came Friday night in the Swamp.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — On a day Jim McElwain talked a lot about guys not playing football for the Florida Gators these days, the UF head coach had some encouraging thoughts about the team's first "live" scrimmage of the preseason.
It went down Friday night in "The Swamp" and was another significant step toward defining the depth chart, especially at the quarterback position, where redshirt freshman Feleipe Franks entered camp as the front-runner, with returnee Luke Del Rio and Notre Dame graduate transfer Malik Zaire very much in the mix.
"The quarterbacks? All three handled the first unit really well," McElwain said. "I think when we were with the 2s and 3s with those guys, Malik moved those 3s pretty well. I thought Luke, especially in our overtime period, did some really good things. I though Feleipe's accuracy was pretty good and he was able to show his arm strength well, which was fun."
The team went at it for a couple hours and for right around 100 plays, so a lot of young players got some important, quality reps.
It was a chance, as McElwain likes to say, for those guys to "make the team."
