
Rooney Takes Home Gold on Day 1 of World University Games

Three Gators compete in total on first day of competition; Two earn spot in finals
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Maxime Rooney took home his first medal of the week on the first day of the World University Games in Taiwan, winning gold in the men's 4x100m free relay.
Rooney's only event of the day was the men's 100m free relay, but it was enough to earn him a gold medal. Team USA posted a time of 3:14.01, beating the field by over a second and Rooney swam a split of 49.02.
The rising sophomore posted the second fastest split in the preliminary round (49.03), helping team USA finish second overall with a time of 3:17.08.
Two other Gators found themselves competing on day 1 as well, with Mitch D'Arrigo earning a spot in the finals round.
Gator alum D'Arrigo earned a spot in the men's 400m freestyle final after finishing fourth overall in the preliminary round with a time of 3:49.84. He swam a 3:57.37 in the final, putting him in eighth place overall.
Bayley Main (New Zealand) raced in both the men's 100m backstroke and the men's 4x100m freestyle relay on the first day of competition. The redshirt-junior posted a time of 57.34 in the 100m backstroke preliminary, good for 36th place overall.
In the 4x100m free relay, Main and team New Zealand finished 17th with a time of 3:25.76 and a split of 51.55.
Day 2 preliminaries begin on Sunday at 9 p.m. EST (9 a.m. on Monday in Taiwan) with the men's 200m freestyle event.
