GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Sophomore center Gorjok Gak, Australia, and graduate transfer guard Egor Koulechov, Israel, wrapped up group play Friday the 2017 World University Games.
After five games of in Group D play, Kulechov and Israel secured four wins advancing to the medal rounds. Gak and Australia picked up three wins in group play finishing fourth in Group D and will play in the consolation bracket.
Heading into their matchup in game three, both teams held a record of 1-1 and in need of a win to move up in the group. The Gators led each of their teams in scoring as Koulechov dropped 24 points while collecting 11 boards leading Israel to an 89-72 victory. Gak finished the game with 16 points and seven rebounds in the losing effort.
Israel rode that momentum through their final two games topping Mozambique 93-49 and rolling past Ukraine 105-78. Koulechov netted 13 points in the win over Mozambique while finishing the Ukraine game with 14 points pouring in four threes.
After the loss to Israel, Gak and Australia won their final two games over Russia 89-71 and Mozambique 87-58. Gak recorded a double-double, 16 points and 11 rebounds, in the win over Russia while posting four points and nine boards against Mizambique.
Kulechov and Israel will face the United States in the quarterfinals while Gak and Australia take on Estonia in the consolation bracket.
