Redshirt senior punter one of 181 semifinalists for 2017 football scholar-athlete award

GAINESVILE, Fla. – Redshirt senior Johnny Townsend was named as one of 181 semifinalists for the 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy, as the National Football Foundation announced Tuesday.
In its 59th year, the award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.
Through his first three games, Townsend leads the nation in punting average, recording 50.81 yards per punt. He has racked up 813 yards on 16 attempts and his longest punt of the season was a 61-yarder against Kentucky on Sept. 23.
Townsend has multiple accolades to his name, including First Team All-America honors by CBS Sports and Second Team All-America honors by Fox Sports. He has also been selected as one of 10 Ray Guy Award semifinalists in the last two seasons.
On the academics side, Townsend earned his Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunication in May of 2017 and is currently earning his Masters of Science in Management. The Orlando, Fla. native is a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member and was named SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll in 2013.
Townsend is one of only 12 special teams players selected as semifinalists for the award and is one of 19 All-Americans tabbed to the list.
The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Nov. 1, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, presented by Fidelity Investments. The finalists will travel to New York City for the 60th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 5.
Live during the event, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 28th William V. Campbell Trophy and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.
