Women's Tennis to play for event titles in singles and doubles Monday
Updated Main Draw Singles and Doubles Oct. 22
ATLANTA – Monday's ITA Southeastern Regional Championships in both singles and doubles will feature solely University of Florida women's tennis players as the Gators occupy both spots in the respective event titles after an impressive performance Sunday at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex on the campus of Georgia Tech.
Florida's McCartney Kessler and Ida Jarlskog will meet Monday morning in the Southeastern Regional's main draw singles final. After a singles champion is crowned, Kessler and Victoria Emma will take on Jarlskog and Tsveta Dimitrova in the main draw doubles final.
UF finished 5-1 in singles for the day, and its lone loss came in a match that featured two Gator players. The Gators posted a 2-0 record on the doubles circuit.
Facing off against some of the region's elite talent, Kessler and Jarlskog each won a pair of matches in the singles main draw to secure a spot in the tournament final and after a short break, Kessler and Jarlskog teamed up with their respective doubles partners to win again, and advance to the doubles championship.
In the main draw doubles semifinal matchups, Kessler/Emma fought for a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win against host Georgia Tech's duo of Jones/Said while Jarlskog/Dimitrova came away with a victory (6-1, 7-5) over Georgia's Gonzalez/Coppoc.
The Gators began the day with a clean sweep in the singles quarterfinals as Emma, Kessler and Jarlskog all claimed victories in their opening matches. Kessler defeated Ana Madcur of Miami (6-0, 6-3) and Emma knocked off Georgia State's Damira Muminovic (6-3, 6-2). Jarlskog completed Florida's unblemished quarterfinal round by defeating her former Georgia Tech teammate Kenya Jones (6-4, 6-2).
With their success in the quarterfinal round, the Gators accounted for three of the final four spots in the singles semifinal.
Kessler drew Georgia's Marta Gonzalez while Jarlskog and Emma met for an all-Florida semifinal matchup. Kessler defeated her SEC foe Gonzalez by the score of 6-3, 6-1. Fittingly, the semifinal featuring the two Gators players went three sets. Jarlskog claimed the match's first set 6-2, but Emma came back to win set two, 6-4, which set up a winner-take-all third stanza with a trip to the finals on the line. The Sweden native, Jarlskog, stormed back to win the final set, 6-0.
In the consolation bracket, the doubles tandem of Katie Kubicz and Marlee Zein posted a 1-1 record on the day. Kubicz/Zein earned a hard-fought win over North Florida's Montano/Melilo (8-6) but came up short in their next match, suffering an 8-1 setback to Clayton/Wolff of Georgia. On the singles court, Kubicz earned a victory (6-3, 6-3) over Valentina Martin of Central Florida while Dimitrova defeated Georgia's Eleni Christofi (6-3, 6-3).
The singles and doubles champions receive an automatic entry into the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships which are to be held Nov. 7-11 at the Sunrise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Arizona.
Quotes from the Court (Head Coach Roland Thornqvist)
"I'm really proud of our growth over this last month. Today we showed both determination and poise, having to play some great tennis to advance. Ida and Victoria played some really physical tennis. It's always too bad that we have to face each other but that comes with the territory at this stage of the tournament. McCartney was excellent in her execution. She's improved both her pace and her decision making from last year. Our doubles play was also much improved. We're learning how to play together both offensively as well as on defense. I'm excited to see the conclusion of this event tomorrow. Hopefully we will raise our level even more."
