Gators’ run ends at ITA All-American Championships

Florida falls in the semifinals of consolation singles and main draw doubles.

TULSA, Okla. – Florida's week-long run at the ITA All-American Championships came to an end in the semifinal matches on Sunday, as the final three Gators were eliminated from the tournament.

Johannes Ingildsen was the No. 7 seed in the singles main draw.  After losing in the first round, he stormed back and took three matches, only dropping one set to advance to the semifinals, but that was all the further he would go.  Ingildsen lost to John McNally of Ohio State 2-6, 6-3, 1-6.  With his loss coming in the semifinals of the consolation draw, Ingildsen does not receive an automatic bid to the National Fall Championships and he will have to fight for that bid in the Regional Championships in two weeks.

Oliver Crawford and Andy Andrade worked their way through the qualifying doubles draw into the main draw.  Once they were there, the sophomore team won three consecutive matches in straight set victories.  With their win in the quarterfinals, Crawford and Andrade earned an automatic bid to the fall championships, but were still in contention for the All-American Championship title as well.  The doubles tandem fell short with a 5-7, 4-6 loss to Alex Kobelt and Kyle Seelig of Ohio State.

Crawford and Andrade were the only Gators to receive automatic qualifications into the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Ariz. Nov. 7-11.  The rest of the Gators' team will have to qualify at the ITA Regional Championships or earn an at-large bid or wildcard from the ITA.

Thoughts from Assistant Coach Tanner Stump:
  • "Tough last day for the Gators here in Tulsa but proud of our guys for putting it on the line again today which can be difficult at this stage of the tournament.  We didn't play our best, but fought and competed in a manner that represented the University of Florida well."
  • "We have plenty to work on moving forward but that is why we play these tournaments so that we can better learn how to handle these situations in the future.  We'll get some rest early this week and then get right back to work which I know the guys are excited to begin."

Up Next:
  • The Gators will rest up before getting back to work in preparation for the USA F28 Futures in Harlingen, Texas (Oct. 15-21) and the ITA Regional Championships in Athens, Ga. (Oct. 19-23).
