LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Gators' time at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic comes to a close following a loss in the semifinals of the doubles draw and three singles losses.
Lukas Greif and
Brian Berdusco defeated Johnathan Small and Guillermo Cabrera of Notre Dame in the quarterfinals 8-3 to continue through the bracket, but their run ended in an 8-4 loss to Chase Wood and Richard Thongoana of Florida State. This marks the third fall tournament in which a Gators doubles team has advanced to the semifinals. This is the second semifinal advancement for the freshman/sophomore duo, which led to their doubles title at the UVA Masters. Berdusco also claimed the doubles title at the ITA Regional Championships with junior
Johannes Ingildsen.
In singles, senior
McClain Kessler won the final game of his suspended match from Friday to advance to the singles quarterfinals. Kessler defeated Davey Roberts of Princeton 7-5, 6-4 after he was up a set and 5-4 in the second and rain forced the match to be postponed until Saturday morning.
After Kessler's singles victory, the Gators struggled to find any success in singles. Berdusco dropped his consolation quarterfinal match to Ezequiel Cerrini of FGCU in straight sets. Greif and Kessler were both eliminated from the singles main draw following straight set losses.
