Tsveta Dimitrova and Marlee Zein Advance to Flight A Finals
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Florida women's tennis team completed its first day of competition at the Seminole All-Conference Showdown Friday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Courts on the Campus of Florida State University.
Taking the court for what will be their final tournament of the fall campaign, the Gators enjoyed a successful opening day as they advanced a doubles duo to the Flight A Championship and a singles player into the Flight C Semifinals.
UF began the day on the doubles court with junior Tsveta Dimitrova and freshman Marlee Zein. The duo posted a pair of convincing victories, knocking off Sofia Duran and Anastasiia Bovoloskaya of West Virginia by a tally of 6-1 and defeating Wisconsin's Anna Makarova and Lexi Keberle, 6-2.
On the singles circuit, Katie Kubicz and Wisconsin's Melissa Pick battled in a competitive first set but the Gator junior would claim it, 7-5, and follow it up with a 6-1 victory in the second to clinch a Semifinal berth. After falling in the first set, 4-6, Zein claimed the second, 6-2, but couldn't break through in the super tiebreak, falling 10-8 and dropping her match to Furman's Katty Weymouth. Dimitrova battled against another Wisconsin Badger, in Lexi Keberle, but fell 4-6, 2-6 to the sophomore.
Play resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning beginning with doubles play.
Quotes from the Court – Associate Head Coach Dave Balogh
On the Gators' play in doubles
"I really liked how we started both matches. We were very aggressive but also displayed great body language and energy as well. We were missing that last weekend so it was nice to see them get that back!"
On the Gators' play in singles
"Overall, both Wisconsin and Furman played very well. We just need to get a bit better at the end of close sets, on those big deuce points, and in super tiebreaks."
