The 2017 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year struck out 44 batters over 22.2 innings last week.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Junior Kelly Barnhill was named Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Pitcher of the week and USA Softball Co-Player of the Week after having a series of stellar performances in the circle for the Florida softball team.
Barnhill (7-0) struck out 44 batters over 22.2 innings to go 4-0 for the week. Not only did the Marietta, Ga. native go undefeated last week, but she threw her fourth career no-hitter in a game against Iowa State (Feb. 24) and followed that up the next day with her first career perfect game in a 8-0 (5 inning) win over Georgia Southern.
At the start of the week, she dealt a season-high 15 strikeouts to Oakland over 5.2 innings of work.
This is the second time in Barnhill's career where she captured both national player of the week awards along with being named the Southeastern Conference Co-Pitcher of the week.
The talented right-handed pitcher earned the awards last year during the week of April 18, after she recorded a 4-0 record over Top 25 competition and threw her second career no-hitter.
Florida is preparing to compete in the Judi Garman Classic (Mar. 1-3) against Loyola Marymount, Cal State Fullerton, Michigan State, Charlotte and Baylor.
Quotes
Kelly Barnhill
"I am really honored to receive these awards. We had a great weekend, we were hitting the ball left and right and our defense made some great plays. Of course, none of this would have ever been possible without Janell (Wheaton) behind the plate. She has a nice stabilizing personality that makes you feel comfortable no matter the situation, but she can also be tough on you.
Also, without (Jennifer) Rocha's pitch calling those games would be completely different. I couldn't imagine being somewhere without her calling pitches. Overall it was a great weekend, great team wins and I can't wait to see what we can do in California this week."
Tim Walton
"I am extremely proud of Kelly and the body of work she was able to put together last week. She has been working tirelessly to improve every facet of her game, so to see the results from that work be recognized by the NFCA & USA Softball goes to show how valuable Kelly was to her team last week."
