University of Florida senior Rachel Slocum is part of the 2018 Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, announced today by the league office. Each school places a gymnast who gives back to her community through exemplary service efforts on the team. Each of the 21 sports the league sponsors has its own Community Service Team. It's time for a Brain Break! Rachel Slocum (middle) helps leads children in an active study break. Slocum's many Goodwill Gator activities earned her a spot on the 2018 Southeastern Conference Gymnastics Community Service team.
Since fall 2017 classes began, Slocum leads the Gator gymnasts with 40 community service hours.
She's made 12 visits to local schools to lead elementary students in active study breaks dubbed 'Brain Breaks' by the participants. In the fall, Slocum helped at a pair of collection events to benefit those impacted by Hurricane Irma. She also helped at the First Responders Thank-You breakfast after Alachua County's visit from Hurricane Irma.
Slocum also participated in "Climb for Cancer" – an event where student-athletes participate in different sports with children who have cancer. She volunteered at UF Health by participating in Caleb's Pitch Syringe Art Painting, where student-athletes paint canvases with pediatric patients at Shands.
She helped gift-wrap shoes to distribute at local elementary schools as part of the annual Florida student-athlete led Gator Tracks. Gator student-athletes purchased and distributed more than 400 pairs of shoes to local children in need of a new pair of shoes in December of 2017
In the fall of 2017, Slocum joined her teammates for the annual Harvest Food Drive, an event where aspiring gymnasts can join the Gators for an afternoon gymnastics clinic. Admission is six non-perishable food items and the team contributed more than 900 pounds of food items to a local food after the 2017 event.
