A glance at the latest headlines covering the Gators.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In his first press conference since the Gators held their first scrimmage of spring camp, it didn't take long for Dan Mullen to get asked Monday what he thought about quarterbacks Feleipe Franks, Kyle Trask, Emory Jones and Jake Allen.
In fact, after Mullen's opening remarks, the first question tossed Mullen's way was about the quarterbacks. All four took reps in Friday's scrimmage, with Franks and Trask taking the majority of the snaps on a damp afternoon at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
So, let's cut to the chase:
"They were OK,'' Mullen said. "Put a lot of different things on their plate. One of the things they have to do is – I think all of them – is just learn how to act. You are always judged on the next play. Too much, I think, they were worried about the last play or trying to force or make a big play on the next play.
"Just manage the game and take it one snap at a time. No matter if your last play was a touchdown or your last play was an interception, no one really cares. You are always going to be judged on the next play. As soon as you start thinking and grasping that concept, you are going to start performing at a higher level."
You don't have to be a quarterback whisperer to surmise Mullen wants to see more from the position group before he is anywhere near a final conclusion on the starter in the season opener in five months.
Of course, that should surprise no one.
"To me they're all brand new, young quarterbacks,'' he said. "I don't really know what they've learned in the past, so I don't judge them."
Mullen did have a piece of advice for Franks, who threw a pair of touchdown passes and three interceptions in the scrimmage. Franks stopped by the football offices Monday morning to review film and dissect his performance.
After Friday's scrimmage, the perception in the media was that Franks was uptight and defensive discussing his performance.
"We'll get him smiling a little bit more at times and lighten up some,'' Mullen said.
