Sabrina Cristodero garnered Freshman of the Week accolades; Cara Trombetta named to Honor Roll
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – For the third straight week, two Gators have garnered BIG EAST weekly honors, as the league announced Tuesday. Freshman Sabrina Cristodero was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, while sophomore Cara Trombetta was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
Cristodero earned the honor after setting a new program record of 14 draw controls against Butler. That mark surpassed the previous record of 12, set by Shannon Kavanagh against Villanova (4/8). The Glen Head, N.Y. native sits at 99 draw controls this season, just seven off tying Mollie Stevens' single season record of 106.
Against Butler, Cristodero also recorded one goal, along with one ground ball and one caused turnover. She was a crucial part of the Gator defense that allowed three goals to the Bulldogs.
To earn her spot on Honor Roll, Trombetta helped to spark the Gator defense into surrendering just three goals against Butler, matching UF's opponent low on the season. She was a member of the defensive unit that forced Butler into 17 turnovers, the most for the Gators in the last four outings.
This season, Trombetta has 30 caused turnovers, a new program record for the Gators. She surpassed her mark of 27 from last season.
The Gators host the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament on Thursday, facing Marquette at 4 p.m. The winner of that game will face the winner of Georgetown/Denver on Saturday at Noon.
