Tuesday, May 1, 2018 | Track and Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Horizontal jumpers KeAndre Bates and Yanis David were named the SEC Field Athlete of the Week for their respective genders, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
At last weekend's National Relay Championships, David hopped, skipped, and jumped her way onto the Collegiate All-Time Top 10 triple jump list, becoming the No. 7 performer in collegiate history with the 15th-farthest mark in collegiate history. The Lamentin, Guadeloupe native posted a mark of 14.13 meters (46 feet, 4.25 inches), shattering Ciarra Brewer's four-year-old school record of 13.91 meters (45 feet, 7.75 inches). Her mark ranks second nationally this season, only trailing American and collegiate record holder Keturah Orji.
Even more impressive, David is the fourth woman in collegiate history to wind-legally triple jump at least 14.05 meters and wind-legally long jump at least 6.45 meters. (Her outdoor personal best of 6.56 meters / 21 feet, 6.25 inches came at last July's U23 European Championships.) The other three are Stanford's Erica McLain (2005-08), Orji, and Pittsburgh's Trecia Smith (1996-99).
David is one of seven women in the country ranked in the top three nationally in multiple individual events, as she also ranks third in the long jump with a slightly-wind-aided 6.69 meters (21 feet, 11.5 inches). The others are San Francisco's Marie Bouchard, Arkansas' Taliyah Brooks, Arizona State's Maggie Ewen, Kentucky's Sydney McLaughlin, Orji, and Missouri's Karissa Schweizer.
Bates posted an NCAA lead in the triple jump (16.69 meters / 54 feet, 9.25 inches), winning a competition that produced the top six triple jumpers on this week's national descending order list. The El Paso, Texas native also posted a season-best mark in the long jump (7.87 meters / 25 feet, 10 inches), putting him to 15th on the national descending order list.
Bates, the reigning outdoor national champion in both horizontal jumps, leads all SEC triple jumpers by 19 centimeters, and is ahead of all non-Florida SEC triple jumpers by a whopping 61 centimeters (2 feet).
Bates, David, and the Gators continue their seasons next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, when they travel to the SEC Outdoor Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.
