Looking to join Phil Hancock as second award winner in program history
STILLWATER, Okla. -- Florida sophomore Andy Zhang has been nominated as one of 20 collegiate golfers in the country for the Fred Haskins Award.
The award honors the most outstanding collegiate golfer in the United States.
Zhang looks to become the second winner of the award in the program's history. Phil Hancock took home the award in 1976 while Chris DiMarco, Matt Every, Sam Horsfield, David Gossett, Steve Scott and Camilo Villegas all received votes in their respective years.
The Gator sophomore became the first player in program history to claim the Southeastern Conference and NCAA Regional medalist honors in the same season. He also became the first player in Florida history to win in back-to-back events since Bank Vongvanji in 2011.
The award is voted on by all active Division I Male Golfers, Division I Male Golf Head Coaches & Assistant Coaches, Division I Golf SIDs, National Golf Writers, golf specific television media and past recipients of the Haskins Award.
The winner will also get an exemption into the PGA Tour's Greenbrier Classic this July in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
Player's Take:
"It's such an honor to be nominated for the Fred Haskins award. To be nominated for such a prestigious award is in a way showing the handwork being paid off on the golf course, and I'd like to thank committee and UF for the opportunity," - Sophomore Andy Zhang
Coach's Take:
"Andy has meant everything to the Florida Gators and myself since the day he committed to becoming a Gator. The work ethic and dedication he has brought to our culture will have an influence on our program for a long, long time. Not only is Andy one of the best players in college golf, I have no doubt he is one of the best people too." - Coach J.C. Deacon
