GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Number one overall seed Florida opens play in the 2018 NCAA Gainesville Regional on Friday at noon against Columbia. Game two of the Regional is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. between Jacksonville and Florida Atlantic.
The Gators dominated during the first 13 weeks of the regular season before stumbling down the stretch. Still, UF's overall resume was enough for the NCAA committee to reward them with the No. 1 overall seed for the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Florida won its first 13 series of the regular season and clinched its second-straight SEC Regular Season title with a series win over Georgia. Head coach Kevin O'Sullivan earned SEC Coach of the Year honors for the third time.
Junior right-hander Brady Singer (10-1, 2.25 ERA) was named the SEC Pitcher of the Year and classmate Jackson Kowar (9-4, 3.21 ERA) earned Second Team All-SEC honors. Closer Michael Byrne (2-1, 1.99 ERA, 13 saves) was named to the All-SEC First Team. Junior third baseman Jonathan India (.362, 17 HR, 42 RBI) was named the SEC Player of the Year and senior catcher JJ Schwarz (.325, 12 HR, 46 RBI) joined him on the All-SEC First Team.
The Dolphins are making their 15th NCAA Tournament appearance. JU earned an at-large bid after finishing at No. 23 RPI in the country. The team's 39 wins are its most since 2006 and had five wins over nationally-ranked opponents. Florida and Jacksonville split a pair of regular season matchups in Gainesville (UF won 10-3 on 3/21; JU won 8-4 on 4/17).
Sophomore shortstop Scott Dubrule (.358, 52 RBI) earned First Team All-ASUN honors in 2018 along with junior right-hander Chris Gau (8-3, 2.65 ERA). Closer Chris Mauloni (3-2, 2.53 ERA) was named to the ASUN Second Team and ASUN All-Freshman team after recording 20 saves in his freshman campaign.
The Owls earned the program's 13th NCAA appearance and its fourth in the past six years. FAU ranked 33rd in the latest NCAA RPI. They finished third in the Conference USA standings with a 19-8-1 league mark. Florida beat FAU 6-1 on Feb. 20 in the only matchup between the two teams this season.
Junior shortstop Tyler Frank (.315, 13 HR, 34 RBI) was named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year and was an All-C-USA First Team selection. Outfielder David Miranda (.321, 9 HR, 45 RBI) and pitchers Jake Miednik (7-1, 3.05 ERA) and Zach Schneider (6-1, 2.08 ERA, 15 saves) were also First Team picks.
The Lions earned their fourth NCAA Tournament berth in the past six years after sweeping Yale in the Ivy League Championship Series. Columbia last went to a Regional in 2015, when they went 3-2 in the Coral Gables Regional, one game shy of advancing to the Super Regionals. Florida swept Columbia in a three-game series early in the 2017 season in Gainesville.
Head coach Brett Boretti was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year and seven players earned All-Conference honors. First baseman Chandler Bengtson (.257, 10 HR, 31 RBI) led the league with 10 homers while shortstop Joe Engel (.316, 29 RBI) earned All-Conference honors for the second year in a row. Junior outfielder Ben Porter (.368, 13 RBI) and sophomore designated hitter Liam McGill (.319, 6 HR, 30 RBI) were Second Team All-Ivy League selections.

With temperatures expected to be in the upper 80s, the UAA has arranged for several heat initiatives to help fans cool off. Misting fans will be set up on the first baseline, third baseline and behind home plate. Shade tents will also be in place down the first baseline.
