2018 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Junior Tyrie Cleveland collected his first preseason honor on Wednesday, as the Gators wide receiver was named to the 2018 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list.
Cleveland, a native of Houston, Texas, garnered a spot on the watch list after he appeared in 10 games and started eight at wide receiver for the Gators in 2017. Statistically, Cleveland totaled 22 catches for a team-leading 410 yards and two touchdowns in 2017. He also spent time as a kick returner for the Gators early in the season.
The telecommunications major recorded his second career 100-yard receiving game against Kentucky. Then one week later, Cleveland recorded five catches for 93 yards and a touchdown against Tennessee. His touchdown came on the game-winning 63-yard pass from Feleipe Franks That play marked the only time in school history that the Gators defeated an opponent with a touchdown on the final play of regulation.
He was named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Honorable Mention Player of the Week following the aforementioned contest against the Volunteers.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award was announced in 2012 by the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler. It is presented annually to the nation's outstanding Division I college offensive player who meets one or more of the following criteria: 1. Born in Texas; 2. Graduated from a Texas High School; or 3. Played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.
The player must also exhibit the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell, including integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, community and tenacity - specifically tenacity to persist, drive, determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
