Carter's Corner: Seven Gators to Miss Opener
Saturday, September 1, 2018 | Football, Scott Carter
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Gators will be without seven suspended players in tonight's season opener against Charleston Southern.
Senior defensive lineman Cece Jefferson is the most prominent player. The others who won't play: sophomore receiver Kadarius Toney, sophomore defensive lineman Kyree Campbell, redshirt junior defensive lineman Luke Ancrum, sophomore cornerback Brian Edwards, sophomore running back Adarius Lemons and walk-on freshman James Washington.
GatorCountry.com was the first media outlet to report the suspensions due to the players "not living up to the Gator standard."
Jefferson's absence is due to academic-related issues and leaves the biggest void. A senior defensive lineman, Jefferson led the Gators with 13.5 tackles and 4.5 sacks last season. He underwent offseason shoulder surgery and was limited at the start of preseason camp. Junior Jachai Polite, listed ahead of Jefferson on the depth chart at the Buck end position, will make his fifth career start.
Polite suffered a season-ending injury in last season's loss to Georgia but was one of the Gators' top performers in camp.
"He's had a great camp. I mean, he's had a great training camp,'' Mullen said this week. "He's worked his tail off, and you know, it's the effort you give on the field."
Tonight's game is on the SEC Network at 7:30.
