Gators 2018 Class Ranked No. 5 By Baseball America
Wednesday, September 12, 2018 | Baseball
Baseball America released its 2018 recruiting rankings on Wednesday and the Florida Gators checked in at No. 5.
For the sixth year in a row, the Gators coaching staff has brought in a top-five recruiting class. Florida has had a top five class eight times in 11 years under head coach Kevin O'Sullivan.
UF's class ranked third among Southeastern Conference teams, behind LSU (#1) and Vanderbilt (#2).
Despite losing five signees to the 2018 MLB Draft, the Gators incoming class includes 14 newcomers -- nine freshmen and five transfers. For the sixth year in a row, UF had at least five players from the BA 500.
Five incoming freshmen were selected in the 2018 MLB Draft: including outfielder Kendrick Calilao (30th round, Cardinals), right-hander Nick Pogue (33rd round, Rockies), infielder Cory Acton (39th round, Tigers), right-hander David Luethje (40th round, Rays) and right-hander Ben Specht (40th round, Dodgers).
Baseball America's recruiting rankings are based on players who enroll at school each fall. Athletes who initially signed letters of intent with a school but then signed a pro contract after being drafted do not count in the overall evaluation.
Florida went 49-21 last season and advanced to the College World Series for the fourth year in a row. The Gators earned a top-eight national seed for the NCAA tournament for the ninth time in 10 years, the best mark of any school in the country.
