Sophomore duo earns 8-1 victory to move onto second round of pre-qualifiers
MALIBU, Calif. – The tandem of McCartney Kessler and Ida Jarlskog advanced to the second round of the pre-qualifying doubles bracket at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships by picking up an 8-1 victory over Utah's Leah Heimuli and Whitney Turley Saturday at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on the campus of Pepperdine University.
In the Gators' lone action of the day, the sophomore duo got out to an early 2-1 lead and never looked back to punch a ticket into Sunday's second round of pre-qualifiers.
Fifth-seeded Kessler and Jarlskog resume competition Sunday when they take on Marta Perez-Mur and Tijana Spasojevic of the University of Texas at 1 p.m. ET from Malibu.
With a win in tomorrow's first matchup, the two will advance and play with a bid into the qualifying round on the line. The Florida pair would take on the winner of Corley/Asghar (Oklahoma) and No. 3 Broomfield/Miller (UCLA).
Quotes from the Court
Head Coach Roland Thornqvist
On keys to the victory
"We did the little things right. We made first serves and made almost every return. That made it difficult for our opponents to get ahead in any of the games. We also communicated really well."
On Kessler and Jarlskog getting more comfortable playing together
"They are getting to know each other better with every set. They are learning each other's tendencies and therefore becoming more aggressive."
