Greenard Receives Bednarik Award Watch List Recognition

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Maxwell Football Club today announced the expansion of its 2019 Watch Lists for both the 83rd Maxwell Award and the 25th Chuck Bednarik Award, as Florida's Jonathan Greenard was added to the Bednarik Award Watch List upon his defensive performance thus far on the 2019 season.
The original lists were comprised of players selected based on their 2018 performances, though, the Club believes several additional players warrant attention because of their noteworthy play as the 2019 season has progressed. Greenard is one of 11 players to be added to the Bednarik Award Watch List.
Greenard has proved to be one of the most noteworthy defensive players in the nation this season, as the Louisville transfer has done wonders for the Gators' defense in his time wearing the blue and orange. Since the addition of Greenard this season, the Gators currently rank first in the nation in red zone defense (35.7%) and are fifth-nationally in scoring defense (9.5 points) and team sacks (26.0).
A native of Hiram, Ga., Greenard matched a season-high six tackles, a feat he's recorded three times this season, and three QB hurries in Florida's 24-13 win over Auburn on Saturday. Greenard was an integral part of a Florida defense that held Auburn to season-lows in points (13), rushing yards (124) and total yards (269), while only allowing the Tigers to convert two of their 14 third downs (14.3%) for the game. He leads the Gators in tackles for losses, with 6.5 tackles for a loss of 21 yards, and sacks, with 4.0 sacks for a loss of 18 yards, while placing second on the team in tackles (28).
Additionally, Greenard ranks second in the SEC for sacks, just one sack shy of the leader (5.0).
The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik. Mr. Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame 69' and the NFL Hall of Fame 67'.
The No. 7 Florida Gators travel to Death Valley this Saturday for another highly anticipated top-10 matchup with No. 5 LSU, slated for an 8:00 p.m. kickoff on ESPN.
