Home Runs Propel Gators Past UCF in Fall Exhibition

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida softball team closed out its home fall schedule with a 12-4 win in 10-innings against UCF Sunday afternoon at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.
The Gators offense exploded for 15 hits in the 10-inning affair with six being of the extra-base variety, five home runs and a triple, and the pitching held UCF to a .183 batting average.
The offense kicked into high gear in the 1st inning with Jordan Matthews' two-run home run that gave the Gators the initial 2-0 lead. Kendyl Lindaman scored on Matthews' home run after she reached with a two-out single down the right field line.
Hoover extended UF's lead out to 3-0 in the 2nd inning on a leadoff triple to the gap in right center and sprinted home after the Knights throw to third by the second baseman sailed high.
Matthews continued to produce at the plate when she drove home E.C. Taylor from second base on a sharply hit grounder through the right side of the Knights infield.
UCF closed down Florida's lead in the 4th inning, 4-3, via a three-run home run. The Knights leadoff the inning with a walk and reached in the following at-bat on an uncharacteristic UF error.
Julia Cottrill responded in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run over the wall in left center. Her third home run fall put UF ahead 5-3 over UCF.
The Gators scratched across a pair of runs in the 5th inning to take a 7-3 advantage over the Knights. A bases loaded hit by pitch drawn by Hannah Adams scored Echols and a fielder's choice RBI groundout by Cottrill scored Lindaman from third.
Adams crushed a two-run home run over the right field wall and Jordan Roberts drove in freshman Baylee Goddard on a SAC fly to left field to extend the Gators lead out to 10-3 in the 7th inning.
UFC picked up its fourth run of the game and closed down the UF lead to 10-4 via a solo home run to left field in the 8th inning of play.
Lindaman launched the Gators fourth home run of the day as she stretched the Gators lead out to 11-4 in the home half of the 8th inning.
Goddard followed up Lindaman's home run with a solo shot of her own in the 9th inning. Goddard's homer cleared the Gators bullpen beyond the left field wall and pushed the final score out to 12-4.
All five Florida pitchers saw action in the circle and combined for 12 strikeouts with only four walks and seven hits. Rylee Trlicek and Katie Chronister picked up 3.0 innings each, while Farley (1.2 innings), Hightower (1.1 innings) and Lugo (1.0 inning) each picked up valuable innings in the effort.
Next up for the Gators is a pair of exhibitions against the USSSA Pride (Nov. 15) at 7:30 p.m. and Florida State (Nov. 16) at 1 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium in Melbourne, Fla.
