Pete Alonso's historic season earned an exclamation point on Monday night.
The Baseball Writers' Association of America named Alonso the National League Rookie of the Year.
"Holy expletive," Alonso said during a live interview Monday night on MLB Network. "This is really a hell of an honor. I just really feel blessed. I gotta say thank you to the New York Mets for giving me the opportunity right out of spring training and believing in me from day one. I'd also like to say thank you to my teammates, because without such an awesome group of guys to help facilitate my development, I wouldn't have put together a really good year. I've got a lot of really good guys in that dugout that have my back. I'm looking forward to next year and going to battle with them."
Alonso is the first former Florida player to earn the honor and the first SEC player to win a Rookie of the Year Award since Chris Coghlan (Ole Miss) did so in 2009 with the Marlins. He earned 29 of 30 first-place votes and totaled 148 points. Atlanta Braves' pitcher Mike Soroka finished second with 82 points and received the final first place vote.
"To just win the award, it doesn't matter if it's unanimous or not," Alonso said. "It's such a blessing. To just have that title is unbelievable. So whether it's unanimous or not, to me it doesn't matter."
The rookie burst onto the scene with nine home runs in April, earning the first of three NL Rookie of the Month honors. He stole the national spotlight in July, making his first All-Star Game appearance and winning the Home Run Derby crown.
Alonso hit 11 home runs in the final month of the season to break both the Mets' franchise record and MLB Rookie Record with 53 home runs on the season.
In 161 games, Alonso hit .260/.358/.583 with 120 runs batted in and 103 runs scored.
