MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Gators closed out the fall schedule with a 6-1 victory over Florida State at Space Coast Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Gators broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 3rd inning of play on Charla Echols RBI single through the right side of the of the Seminoles infield that scored Jade Caraway from second. Caraway led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout to first by Hannah Adams.
Junior right-hander Natalie Lugo kept the Florida State offense off-balance until the 4th inning. FSU produced back-to-back singles to leadoff the inning and a one-out walk later on loaded the bases.
With the bases loaded, the Seminoles scored on a fielder's choice runner interference. Shortstop Sophia Reynoso's attempt to field ground ball was blocked by the runner advancing from second to third and prevented a throw home.
With two outs, senior left-hander Katie Chronister entered in relief and induced a groundout to Echols at third to stifle the FSU rally.
The Florida offense erupted in the bottom of the 5th inning to score four runs. Caraway started the rally with another leadoff walk and Hannah Adams followed suit in the next at-bat to put two Gators on with no outs for Echols.
Echols roped a triple down the right field line to score both Caraway and Adams, and Kendyl Lindaman jacked a two-run home run to left field that extended the Gators lead out to 5-1.
Caraway capped the scoring in the 6th inning when she reached on an infield single, stole second and eventually scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs.
Chronister continued to pitch effectively for the final two innings and held the Seminoles hitless for the remainder of the exhibition. She finished the game with three strikeouts and no walks.
The Gators are scheduled to start their spring season Feb. 7, against Illinois State at the USF Opening Weekend Invitational in Tampa, Fla. The first home game at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium is slated for Feb. 12, against UNF.
