GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has once again partnered with the Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles, tapping into the Sunshine State's passion for college sports by highlighting the annual football game between the two schools as the "Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown."
Florida hosts Florida State inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on SEC Network.
Since its inception in 1958, the Florida-Florida State series has etched itself into sports lore as one of the most prominent rivalries in college football history. In this rivalry of sustained runs, Florida boasts a 35-26-2 all-time record against the Seminoles. In addition, there has only been one upset in this rivalry over the previous 11 seasons (2015), as the higher ranked team won each of the other games.
Florida snapped a five-game losing streak in the series last year with a resounding 41-14 win over Florida State in Tallahassee. The Gators had one of their most impressive offensive performances in the series' history, as they amassed 536 total yards and 41 points – their third-highest total ever in Tallahassee. The 27-point win was also Florida's largest in the series since 2009, when it won 37-10 in Gainesville.
Florida has not beaten Florida State in Gainesville since 2009.
This year's matchup features No. 11 Florida, which finished 6-2 in Southeastern Conference play and has a 9-2 overall record, against an unranked Florida State squad which picked up its sixth win of the year last Saturday against FCS-classified Alabama State.
Saturday's game pits a pair of top-30 passing offenses against one another, with the Gators ranking 19th nationally and the Seminoles checking in at 30th. Florida, however boasts the nation's No. 12-ranked defense, while Florida State is 96th nationally in total defense, and 114th against the pass.
The Gators have held five opponents without touchdowns this season and rank seventh nationally in scoring defense (14.2 points against per game).
Florida and Florida State's partnership with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services reminds fans of the impact the agriculture industry has on Florida's economy and encourages fans to support Florida's farmers and fishermen by asking for Fresh From Florida products when they shop or dine out.
