Gators Arrive in Miami for Orange Bowl
Wednesday, December 25, 2019 | Football
MIAMI -- The Gators got an orange-carpet reception for Christmas.
Following the holiday break, No. 9-ranked Florida (10-2) reconvened Wednesday night here at a downtown hotel in preparation for Monday night's Capital One Orange Bowl matchup against No. 24 Virginia (9-4). As the Gators arrived, Orange Bowl officials greeted players and coaches with gift bags and what else -- oranges.
Gators head coach Dan Mullen spoke to the players at a team meeting as did other groups associated with the bowl game. The Gators hold their first practice in South Florida on Thursday afternoon following a morning press conference.
This is Florida's first trip to Miami for the postseason since winning the national title in 2008 by beating Oklahoma in the BCS National Championship Game hosted by the Orange Bowl. The Gators have played in three traditional Orange Bowls, the last coming in 2001 when Florida defeated Maryland 56-23 in former head coach Steve Spurrier's final game leading the program.
This is just the second meeting in school history against Virginia, the first coming 60 years ago when the Gators beat the Cavaliers 55-10 at Florida Field in 1959.
