Chris Chiozza and Michael Frazier II both earned a place on the USA Basketball World Cup Qualifying February Team for a two-game stint that opens Friday evening in Greensboro.
Chiozza's plans could take a last-minute turn, however. Thursday evening, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Chiozza would sign a 10-day contract with the Houston Rockets. In 36 games with the NBA G League's Capital City Go-Go this season, Chiozza has averaged 13.1 points, 6.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds and shot .415 from 3-point range.
Frazier, meanwhile, has worked his way back from a quad injury that threatened to derail his pro career to earn the chance to represent the USA in international competition once again, previously winning a gold medal in the 2013 U19 World Championships.
Frazier spent significant time back in Gainesville rehabbing and training while taking courses toward his degree, and his efforts have been rewarded. Frazier has averaged 16.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists and is shooting .399 from 3-point range with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers this season.
"I'm very grateful to the training staff and the coaching staff there [at Florida], because without them, none of this would be possible, because they were the ones who basically nursed me back to health and allowed me to use their facilities to work out with their guys once I got cleared to get back on the court," Frazier said in a recent USA Basketball story.
The USA Basketball squad will tip vs. Panama at 7 p.m. Friday on ESPN+ from the Fieldhouse at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C., with a second game vs. Argentina on Feb. 25.
