Gators Drop Midweek Slugfest

WHAT HAPPENED: Florida Atlantic used a four-run ninth inning to come-from-behind to beat Florida 13-11 on Tuesday night at McKethan Stadium.

Florida led for much of the game, but 11 walks and two hit batters by the Gators' pitching staff were too much to overcome despite a strong offensive showing.

UF racked up 21 hits, its second-most of the season, and had eight players with multiple hits. Austin Langworthy went 3-for-4 with a career-high six RBI.

The Gators offense was swinging away from the start, racking up 10 hits through the first two innings to take a 5-1 lead. Langworthy hit his first career grand slam in the second inning to give Florida the lead.

FAU cut the lead to one with three runs in the fourth inning. Wil Dalton pushed the lead back to three with a two-run homer to right field, his fourth of the season.

The Owls took an 8-7 lead in the top of the fifth on a grand slam from designated hitter Bobby Morgensen.

Once again, the Gators answered in the bottom half of the inning. Langworthy tripled to right field and Christian Flint scored from first to tie the game 8-8.

Florida regained the lead in the seventh as Langworthy picked up his sixth RBI of the night and held a 10-8 advantage going to the eighth. FAU cut the lead to one in the eighth, but Kendrick Calilao pushed it to two again with a RBI single to left field.

In the ninth, the Owls scored four runs to take the lead and complete the comeback. A triple from Joe Montes tied the game and Pedro Pages gave FAU a two-run lead with a single to left field.

Langworthy walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth but he was stranded on the basepaths to end the game.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Austin Langworthy – The junior finished 3-for-4 and was a double shy of the cycle. He homered in the second inning, tripled in the fifth and singled in the seventh. He also walked twice.

STANDOUT STAT: 22-1 – Entering Tuesday, the Gators were 22-0 when leading after eight innings. It marked the first time Florida has blown a lead in the ninth this season.

FROM THE COACH: Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan – On tonight's game: "It's obvious we walked too many guys. Nine of the 11 batters walked were by freshmen; we've talked about this plenty this year, the bottom line is we've got to throw the ball across the plate. I think there were two or three instances where we gave up rebound runs. The offense has been doing their job, they swung the bats really well tonight – 21 hits – and the bottom half of the order did really well. Jacob got three hits and Christian Flint got a chance to start so we could rest McConnell for a game and he played really well, and defensively played really well.

"It's unfortunate that we haven't figured out yet to throw the ball across the plate. It's part of the process of learning to get better. I wish we could speed it up, that it would happen quicker. But at the end of the day, we're at where we're at right now. We just need a couple guys to step up on the weekend. I keep thinking that we're close. I think we can get Jack going again on the weekend, he's finally hopefully healthy. Tommy has been consistent the entire year. We need to figure out the third starter and we just need a couple guys to step up on the weekend and give us six outs.

"With 11 walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch, a balk – the little things are getting us. All we can do is continue to work and get better. I know it sounds cliché, but at the end of the day we have to figure it out."

UP NEXT: Florida hosts Kentucky this weekend in an important three-game series. Friday's opener is slated for 6:30 p.m. All three games will air live on the Gators Sports Network.
