Three women’s tennis players to represent the Gators in the upcoming NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Florida women's tennis players Ida Jarlskog, McCartney Kessler and Victoria Emma have been selected to compete in the upcoming NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships, the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee announced Tuesday evening.
Note: Jarlskog will not play in the event as she plans to return home to compete in Sweden this summer.
Jarlskog and Kessler both earned at-large selections into the singles tournament while the doubles duo of Kessler and Emma garnered an at-large bid in the doubles competition.
Kessler is set to make their first appearance in the event. Emma played in the doubles portion a season ago with former Gator Anna Danilina.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 16-19. The University of Central Florida and the Greater Orlando Sports Commission will serve as hosts.
No. 30 Kessler has been a force for Florida, competing at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. Kessler, who dealt with a nagging injury for most of the season, compiled 11 dual match victories. Seven of her wins came over ranked opponents and one of her best came against No. 16 Marta Gonzalez of Georgia. The two-time All-SEC selection began the fall season ranked No. 62 but climbed into the top 50 during the dual match season and stayed put, never earning a ranking higher than 44.
Kessler and Emma paired together to form Florida's No. 1 doubles team and posted seven SEC victories. The duo has appeared in the ITA top 100 on three occasions, surging to as high as No. 35 in the most recent issue. The tandem has registered four top 100 wins, including two victories against top 10 foes. The duo defeated the nation's No. 1 doubles team in Mia Horvit and Ingrid Gamarra Martins of South Carolina at the SEC Tournament.
Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a minimum of 13 started singles matches, with six matches in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for eligible/entered doubles teams. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60 eligible/entered doubles teams, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences.
