GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Freshman Elizabeth Hightower was named SEC Freshman of the Week after a successful outing in the circle against then ranked No. 14 Arkansas Saturday, April 6.
The right-handed pitcher hurled a complete-game shutout against the nationally ranked Razorbacks, which made her only the second freshman pitcher to achieve the feat in SEC play so far this season. She finished the game with six strikeouts and allowed only three hits and two walks.
Hightower also became the first UF freshman pitcher since Kelly Barnhill to record a complete-game shutout against a nationally ranked opponent. Barnhill shut out No. 2 Michigan Feb. 13, 2016 during the Gators opening weekend at a tournament hosted by USF.
The Monticello, Fla. native holds a 1.44 ERA, which currently ranks second among freshman pitchers in the SEC.
This is the first career SEC Freshman of the Week award for Hightower and first freshman weekly accolade for the Gators since Danielle Romanello earned the award April 10, 2018.
Florida is set to take on USF Wednesday at 7 p.m. (ET) on the SEC Network.
