
Clark Beach made it to the podium with a third-place finish in the 200 back
Smith and Clark Beach Shine During Day Two of Phillips 66 National Championships

STANFORD, Calif.— Kieran Smith and Clark Beach paced the Gators on day two of the Phillips 66 National Championships by notching top-three finishes in the finals on Thursday night.
Smith headed into the 200 free finals as the top seed after posting a career-best time and Olympic trial cut of 1:46.21 in the prelims. He would later finish just .06 seconds behind the winner in the A-final with a mark of 1:46.25.
Clark Beach was the second Gator to tally a top finish with his 3rd-place mark in the 200 back after hitting the wall in 1:57.14.
Gators upped its participants on the second day of the event to a total of 19 swimmers. In total, they notched 10 personal-bests and 12 Olympic trial cuts.
Vanessa Pearl, the only Gator to take part in the women's 200 breast, advanced to the B-final with a career-best swim in the prelims of 2:28.97. Pearl would go on to beat her previous mark with the top swim in the B-final with a mark of 2:24.49. This swim was the second-fastest overall time in both event finals and punched her ticket to the Olympic trials next summer in Omaha.
The women's 200 free prelims, the first event of the day, featured a trio of Gators. Kelly Fertel led the group by just meeting the Olympic trial cut standard with a career-best time of 2:01.61. Former Gator All-American Natalie Hinds tallied a 2:02.19 finish in her second event of the championships and Tori Bindi rounded out the group with a mark of 2:04.74 in heat 5.
Former Gator Mitch D'Arrigo joined Smith in the 200 free A-final and finished in 7th-place with a mark of 1:48.37. Trey Freeman was the third Gator to make it out of the prelims, going onto finish in 7th-place in the B-final.
The morning 200 free prelims featured five additional Gators. Dakota Mahaffey posted his first Olympic trial cut in career-best fashion with a time of 1:50.72. Gerry Quinn also hit a career-best by hitting the wall in 1:50.48. Mark Szaranek hit a mark of 1:50.15 in Heat 7, while Ryan Lochte met an Olympic trial cut with a swim of 1:50.25. Grant Sanders rounded out UF with a career-best time of 1:50.81.
Both Dillon Hillis and Grant Sanders posted career-best and Olympic trial cuts in the 200 breast prelims.
The women's 200 back featured Sherridon Dressel and Talia Bates. Dressel qualified for the finals after her career-best mark of 2:12.03 in the prelims and was able to tally 7th overall later in the B-Final. Bates posted a career-best time of 2:16.31 in heat 1.
Ethan Beach and Tyler Silver both joined Clark Beach in the 200 back. Ethan Beach was able to register a time of 1:58.69 in the B-final, good for third-place. He beat his previous best set in the prelims by almost a full second. Silver finished heat 2 of the prelims with a swim of 2:06.81.
