Alonso Breaks Mets' Home Run Record
Wednesday, August 28, 2019 | Baseball
Last night in New York City, rookie Pete Alonso launched the first pitch he saw in the fourth inning deep into the night, a swing that made history for Alonso and the New York Mets.
The rookie from Tampa, Fla., has taken Major League Baseball by storm in 2019.
Over the first half of the season he set numerous historic marks, was named to the National League All-Star team and earned an invite to the 2019 Home Run Derby -- which he won.
Alonso's success has continued in the latter part of the summer and on Tuesday he broke the Mets' single-season home run record, launching his 42nd long ball of the season. Alonso is first rookie set his franchise's single-season home run record since Johnny Rizzo for the Pirates in 1938.
"It's mind-boggling," Alonso told MLB.com after the game. "There are so many great players that have come through this organization, that have played here for a long time, that are Hall of Famers, that are champions, that are just absolutely well-respected throughout the game. It's very humbling, because those people, in my eyes, are legends of the game and also legends here in New York."
With four-plus weeks left in the regular season, Alonso can still surpass a few other notable marks. He is 10 home runs shy of Aaron Judge's all-time rookie record (52) and is on pace to finish with 125 RBI, which would break the Mets' all-time record (124) shared by Mike Piazza and David Wright.
One other mark that will likely be surpassed soon is the most home runs ever hit by a former Gators player. Al Rosen hit 43 home runs during his MVP season with the Cleveland Indians in 1953.
