No. 10 Gators Open 2019 Season With a Sweep

Florida defeated No. 25 Louisville on its home court in front of a sellout crowd

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 10 Florida volleyball team topped No. 25 Louisville 3-0 in front of a sellout crowd on Friday evening.

The Gators took the first set 25-17, then won the second set 25-21. Florida secured the set with a 25-21 win in the final set.

With the victory, Florida has now won 27 season openers, including five against ranked opponents.

Thayer Hall led the way on the offensive front for the Gators, notching 12 kills against the Cardinals. Rachael Kramer pitched in seven, whole Holly Carlton and Paige Hammons secured six kills apiece in the victory.

The Gators recorded 14 blocks at the net, a great performance for the first match. Kramer and Carlton led the way with five blocks apiece.

Marlie Monserez dished out 28 assists on the day, running the offensive system for Florida.

In her return home, Allie Gregory recorded a team-best 14 digs, while Hall pitched in 12.  

The Gators continue the Cardinal Classic on Saturday with a matchup against Dayton at 4:30 p.m.

How it Happened
  • First Set Standout Moment: Florida found themselves tied with the Cardinals 4-4, but then lit a fire under them, going on an 8-0 run behind three kills from Thayer Hall and two kills from Marlie Monserez. UF was able to hold onto the momentum from there, winning 25-17.
    • The Gators hit .464 as a squad in the first set, tallying 16 total kills. That total was led by Thayer Hall, which pitched in six kills, while Marlie Monserez added four of her own – tying her career-best mark in the first set alone.
  • Second Set Standout Moment: With the Gators down 11-6 in the second set, Darrielle King stepped up huge for Florida, recording back-to-back blocks. Marlie Monserez then went on a 6-0 service run to give the Gators the 14-11 lead. Florida was able to hold onto that momentum to go up 2-0 in the frame.  
    • Even with just hitting .108 in the second set, Florida was victorious. The Gators were led by Hall offensively in the second set, where she recorded four kills. Paige Hammons added three of her own, while Holly Carlton and Rachael Kramer pitched in two apiece.  
  • Third Set Standout Moment: With Louisville trailing by just one in the third set, Rachael Kramer took charge, recording two blocks and two assists to give Florida the 12-9 lead. UF continued to hold at least a two-point lead the rest of the way to secure the match.
    • Florida hit .370 in the final set, picking up 13 kills as a squad.
