CHARTING THE GATORS: 'Key' to Efficiency
The three previous Gators to score at least 24 points on seven or fewer shot attempts. From left: Eddie Shannon, Matt Walsh and KeVaughn Allen.
Simply put, Florida sophomore forward Keyontae Johnson was quicker, stronger and more determined than any of the defenders Arkansas sent his way during Tuesday night's 73-59 win at Exactech Arena/O'Connell Center. The 6-foot-5, 231-pounder scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds over 30 minutes, playing all 20 minutes of the second half. How efficient was Johnson's offensive game? Well, Razorbacks coach Eric Musselman, who was groomed in the NBA, put it best. "I mean, he takes seven shots and has 24 points." You can't do that without getting to the free-throw line, and you can't post career highs of 15 makes and 17 attempts without a commitment and conviction to attack the basket like a downhill racer. In doing so, Johnson became just the fourth UF player in the last 25 years to hit 24 points on seven or fewer field-goal attempts. The company Johnson now keeps in that category can be found in graphic below. Make that six double-doubles for Johnson this season, including three in the last four games. He's also tallied double-figure scoring in nine straight games and has overtaken grad-transfer forward Kerry Blackshear Jr. as the team's scoring leader at 13.6 points per game. In Southeastern Conference play, Johnson is shooting 53.5 percent from the floor, 40.6 from the 3-point line and knocking down 85.4 percent of his free throws. If Johnson, with his current aggressive mindset, can ever play a game where he's not in first-half foul trouble (just 10 first-half minutes against the Hogs), he may go for 35 one night.
