Florida begins spring competition Jan. 20 vs. Georgia State.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida women's tennis team unveiled its 2021 dual match schedule Wednesday, a docket that includes 18 regular season matches including eight home contests at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
Fan attendance policies and COVID-19 health and safety protocols will be released soon.
The Gators will prepare for the rigors of SEC play with a five-match non-conference slate which consists of matchups at home vs. Georgia State (Jan. 20) and UCF (Feb. 6) and a trio of road tests at UCF (Jan. 29), FSU (Feb. 4) and USF (Feb. 11).
Over the course of the season, Florida will battle 11 teams that finished last season ranked in the top 50 of the final ITA rankings including six top 25 squads.
UF will hit the road for its first conference action as it opens SEC play at Alabama on Feb. 19 and travels to Auburn on Feb. 21.
After beginning its SEC slate with a road weekend, Florida hosts its first two conference matches Friday, Feb. 26 when it welcomes LSU and Sunday, Feb. 28 when it takes on Texas A&M at the Ring.
The Gators kickoff the month of March with matchups at Georgia and Tennessee, before returning home to Gainesville to host Missouri on Friday, Feb. 12 and Arkansas on Sunday, Feb. 14. Florida then travels to the Magnolia State to take on Ole Miss and Mississippi State to close out March's competition.
Florida hosts Kentucky on Thursday, April 1 and Vanderbilt on Saturday, April 3 in its home finale before concluding its regular season at South Carolina on Sunday, April 11.
Tuscaloosa, Ala. will be the site of the 2021 SEC Women's Tennis Tournament, April 19-23.
In their abbreviated fall campaign, the Gators competed in just two events but found tremendous success in both. Sydney Berlin led the way with a 5-1 record while two-time All-SEC performer McCartney Kessler finished a perfect 3-0. Kessler also defeated the nation's former No. 1 player Katrina Jokic of Georgia. Kessler and fellow upperclassmen Marlee Zein paced Florida with a 4-1 mark in doubles.
The Gators feature a fusion of experience and youth with four upperclassmen, one sophomore and two freshmen. The Gators' roster returns four of their top six competitors from a season ago. UF also welcomes back highly-touted prospect Layne Sleeth, who missed the majority of last season's shortened campaign due to injury, and will see freshman Sara Dahlstrom, who put together a strong fall season, suit up for the first time in dual match play. Additionally, one of the best prep competitors in the Sunshine State, Amber McGinnis, joined the team for the spring semester and will be eligible to compete during dual match season.
Four-time national champion head coach Roland Thornqvist enters his 20th season at Florida with a 512-121 overall record.
In 19 years with Thornqvist on the sidelines, some of Florida's more significant highlights include four NCAA Team Championships (2003, 2011, 2012, & 2017), as well as 11 SEC regular-season titles (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 & 2016) and 10 SEC Tournament crowns (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2016). Over the course of the past 10 completed seasons, Thornqvist is one of just two coaches to win multiple NCAA Championship (3) and finish in the top 10 of the final ITA Rankings at least eight times.
