Joseph Fahnbulleh Named a Semifinalist for The Bowerman
Tuesday, June 21, 2022 | Track and Field
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Joseph Fahnbulleh is one of the ten semifinalists for The Bowerman, the most prestigious honor in collegiate Track and Field.
Florida has had 13 semifinalists for this award since it began in 2009. The last time the Gators had a semifinalist, Grant Holloway in 2019, they won the honor.
Fahnbulleh put on a performance for the ages at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He qualified to the meet in three events and raced six times over the course of the weekend.
He chased down nearly the entire field during the 4x100 relay, anchoring the Gators to a National Runner-Up finish in 38.52.
Florida missed out on the national event title by .03 seconds but provided eight key points to the team title race.
The Hopkins, Minn. followed that up by sweeping the 100 meters and 200 meters in dramatic fashion.
Fahnbulleh trailed the pack through the first half of the race during the 100 meters but ran down the entire field, crossing the line and winning the national title in 10.00 seconds.
If that wasn't impressive enough, he came back an hour later to blow the field away in the 200 meters, winning the title in 19.83.
He broke Liberian National Records in both events and ran the No. 4 all-time performance in NCAA history (19.83) in the 200 meters.
His 22 team points helped lead Florida to its fifth NCAA Men's Outdoor Championship and the first half of the team double in Eugene.
Fahnbulleh also helped lead the Gators to the SEC Outdoor Championship in the 4x100 relay, running the anchor leg and crossing in 38.66. He was the SEC Outdoor Runner-Up in the 200 meters.
Fahnbulleh was named USTFCCCA National Outdoor Men's Track Athlete of the Year for his efforts during the outdoor season.
During his two full outdoor seasons, his freshman year cut short due to COVID-19, Fahnbulleh has Five First Team All-American Honors, three national event titles, one national event runner-up finish and the 2022 Men's NCAA Outdoor National Championship.
Fahnbulleh will run at the 2022 World Athletics Championships this summer. He has hit the qualifying standard in both the 100 meters and 200 meters with the latter his primary event.
He was an Olympic Finalist in the 200 Meters at the 2020 Tokyo Games, finishing fifth for Liberia.
The three finalists for The Bowerman will be announced on June 28th.
